Buprenorphine workshop in Hanoi

Buprenorphine workshop in Hanoi

From January 15 to 18, 2019, with Global Fund’s funding, HMU delivered a training on buprenorphine treatment for methadone professionals and peer educators from the three mountainous provinces Dien Bien, Son La, and Nghe An to prepare an effective launching of the new treatment beside current implementation of methadone treatment. A technical assistance team has been formed under the lead of HMU-VHATTC and will assist local professionals in-person and through ECHO when they start buprenorphine in early March 2019. Group discussion at the end of the workshop aimed to bring up strategies to recruit new patients and to timely expand the treatment across the provinces. The trainers met after the training to discuss challenges and how to revise the outcome expectations and agenda for next courses.

An unequal length of treatment experiences between physicians and counselors was the hardest challenge for the training. The initial design of training was for those who were already experienced with methadone treatment. However, while most physicians had at least 2 years of experiences, most (future) counselors were totally new to addiction treatment and had no experiences in delivering methadone treatment. The latter, then, needed more basic knowledge in addiction medicine.
